Crew Certifications: Set Up Certification Requirements

Certification requirements connect your certification types to the people who need them, so Helm CONNECT can tell you who's compliant and who's missing something. You set requirements by any combination of division, position, and asset. You can also use Safe Manning to make sure a minimum number of crew on an asset always hold a given certification. Setting up requirements is optional, but it's the step that turns your categories and types into real compliance tracking.

How Requirements and Safe Manning Work

You build each rule by combining any of these:

• Divisions: applies to everyone in a division.
• Positions: applies to everyone in a position. You can group positions so they share the same requirements.
• Assets: applies to crew on a specific asset.
• Crewing Requirements: applies to a crewing requirement from an asset's personnel schedule. This column appears only if you use personnel schedules.

If you leave one of these lists empty, the rule applies to every item in that list. For example, a rule with nothing selected in the Divisions column applies to crew in every division.

Your certification types appear as columns across the top, grouped by category color. How you mark a cell depends on the view:

• In the Requirements view, a checkbox means every crew member who matches that combination needs the certification type.
• In the Safe Manning view, a number sets minimum coverage: at least that many crew in that combination must hold the certification type, rather than all of them.

For example, in the Requirements view you could require every captain to hold a Master 150, and in the Safe Manning view require that at least one captain or pilot on a given asset holds an MMC.

Set Up Certification Requirements

You can set up certification requirements on the Management > Certifications > Certification Requirements tab. It has two views, Requirements and Safe Manning.

To require a certification

1. Go to the Management > Certifications > Certification Requirements tab, then click Requirements.
2. In the empty row at the bottom of the list, build the combination this rule applies to by selecting any of Divisions, Positions, Assets, or Crewing Requirements.
3. In the certification columns, select the checkbox for each certification type this combination requires.
4. Click the Save icon (the disk icon at the top right of the tab) to save your changes.

To set Safe Manning coverage

1. Go to the Management > Certifications > Certification Requirements tab, then click Safe Manning.
2. In the empty row at the bottom of the list, build the combination by selecting any of Divisions, Positions, Assets, or Requirements.
3. In the certification columns, enter the minimum number of crew in that combination who must hold each certification type.
4. Click the Save icon to save your changes.

To remove a requirement

1. Go to the Management > Certifications > Certification Requirements tab, then click Requirements or Safe Manning, whichever has the rule you want to remove.
2. Click the Remove icon (⊖) to the left of the requirement you want to remove.
3. Click the Save icon to save your changes.
